shortwave listening

For many of us who enjoy radio such as shortwave we get alot of our info on whats going on in the world via stations like CRI,BBC,VOA and a host of others. Some Hams have started there radio carreer via shortwave. When I toured the Pacific via ship I usually go and visit those sites like FEBC on Saipan, and AWR on Guam, where many Hams are also station engineers. One of my friends is Mike who worked and operated as the engineer at KTWR in Guam. Shortwave for me is my way of finding out the info of many countries, some love TV but try and listen to TV signals on a ship thats more than 30 miles away. Many of the countries operate on different frequencies.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8540289.stm as posted on the BBC website, many american Hams are now monitoring the airwaves for communications from the area. As also posted on the website of CQ Magazine. I have been listening to 20m here in Manila and band is open at the moment to South America. http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=Tsunami%20Advisory

my wife has family south of me at the moment in a Place called Bicol and many times Typhoons roll through the area. Hopefully there won’t be a tsunami at this time.

In the mean time the waves are a wait and see game but as seen on Hawaii news and Guam the waves are small at the moment.

I am a Ham Operator and also into other forms of Communications. Like Ham,Shortwave and Utility listening. I travel the world and carry many pieces of Radio Gear, including Yaesu,Sangean and at times Icom radios. I also carry a Scanner like the Pro 60 and Pro 25 from Radio Shack.

In the past 30 yrs I have traveled I try to visit Radio Sites like KTWR, and FEBC from different location. But I also visit friends from different radio clubs like San Diego’s Palomar Amatuer Radio and San Diego sixshooters. I also been to MARC on Guam and also the SARTS group in Singapore and my long time favorite PARA .

My plan is to post info of stations and radio as I travel.

I will post some of my loggings and station pictures or occassional contacts with stations.

Sometimes we Hams find occassional comments about how I can do the same with a cellphone, I have been at this since 1982 and have yet to hear how many countries a person has worked on those gadgets. To me cellphones are good tools but there are times like all items of breakdowns and when the going gets rough it will. Hams always seem to get through where many cannot. Police groups can’t always talk to other groups unless they happen to be on the same frequency. For example a CLEMAR frequency in California on 154 mhz might be linked with other stations through out the state.

On my Ham station I have worked over 120 coutries which is small co
